Kingsdown Road Lichen Heath Survey

Part of the beach beside the Kingsdown Road has developed as a Lichen Heath. This is a very rare localised habitat where specialized lichens have developed on the shingle.

The habitat has developed over a long period of time on what is now stable shingle. Most of the lichen heaths that occurred at Dungeness have now disappeared.

Kentish members of the British Lichen Society have agreed to undertake a survey of the area which will contribute to a book being prepared on Kentish lichens.
