Hawkshill Freedown

Hawkshill Freedown is an area of open space owned and managed by Walmer Parish Council. Purchased by the Parish Council from the Leith estate in 1990, the area has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The 5.5 ha site consists of chalk grassland, a rare habitat, on an exposed level plateau and some local, dense scrub and light woodland on a steep south west facing bank which is partly chalk grassland but mostly scrub of varying ages and densities. Over one hundred different plant species have been found in the area.
